Spearfishing Dogtooth Tuna Madagascar

If you’re an avid spearfisherman, you likely have Dogtooth Tuna high on your bucket list. However, Dogtooth Tuna are notoriously elusive and challenging to catch. That’s where my exclusive spots off the northern coast of Madagascar come in. The Castor Banks area offers vast expanses of unspoiled waters for dogtooth tuna spearfishing, including many secret spots that receive minimal fishing pressure. Here, encountering numerous Dogtooth Tuna is almost guaranteed.

What sets my approach apart is innovation..

Utilizing unique methods to attract these deep-sea giants closer to the surface, we can target Dogtooth Tuna in depths exceeding 60 meters. This thrilling approach not only provides an adrenaline rush but also maximizes your chances of success against these formidable fish.

As your guide, I’ll personally walk you through each step of the process, ensuring you have the best opportunity to shoot and land the Dogtooth Tuna of your dreams.

Castor Banks

Castor is renowned for its abundance of Dogtooth Tuna, Marlin, and Sailfish, setting it apart as a premier destination for spearfishing enthusiasts. Few places around the globe can rival the sheer numbers of incredible fish you’ll encounter here.

The reef rises from hundreds of meters deep to approximately 20 meters, with occasional bumps and shallower areas reaching depths of around 15 meters. This unique topography offers exceptional opportunities for reef fishing, particularly on days with slow currents. Target species include impressive coral trout, groupers, jobfish, and snappers.

Situated approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Nosy Be, Toraka Castor covers a vast area. Given the considerable distance, we opt for live-aboard setups, allowing you to dive during the optimal first and last light periods without spending hours commuting each day. Navigating the expansive Castor Banks to find prime diving spots requires years of experience and understanding of tidal patterns. As a result, you may explore different locations with each outing, ensuring every dive is filled with excitement and new discoveries.

 Intermediate Banks

Tokoka Anelanelana, located west of Cape San Sebastian, is a smaller bank renowned for its challenging conditions and remarkable opportunities for spearfishing enthusiasts seeking giant Dogtooth Tuna. Situated closer to the prevailing easterly winds that envelop the northern tip of Madagascar, accessing this area can be difficult. However, when weather conditions permit, it offers an excellent chance to hunt for these majestic fish.

The reef rises to depths of only 28 meters, making this area more suitable for experienced divers. Our primary dive site, Spot X, is known for its large Dogtooth Tuna specimens, some weighing up to 100kg.

Grand Serpent:

This extensive reef forms a part of the drop-off that stretches from beyond Cape San Sebastian to the vicinity of Nosy Be. It features impressive drop-offs that yield abundant catches of wahoo and other pelagic species.

Mitsio Islands:

Numerous small bumps and reefs surround the Mitsio Islands, teeming with Spanish mackerel and various Trevally species. There’s also a promising spot for sailfish, particularly on days when weather conditions prevent access to Castor. However, the water here may appear slightly green due to tidal influences.

Nosy Be:

While Nosy Be boasts several noteworthy dive sites, divers must exert considerable effort to secure a good catch due to the heavy influence of tidal patterns. As a result, we prefer to focus our efforts on exploring the untouched reefs accessible only via live-aboard expeditions.
